Auditions

An audition is the first step to enter into any performance based industry. This involves the performer displaying his talents by delivering a pre-rehearsed and memorized piece of music or acting in front of a judging panel. An audition is a detailed process that is not always a smooth ride and can be full of twists and turns. It’s always better to know how the system works, before hand, so that you can prepare yourself accordingly and face any surprises or set-backs that may perhaps develop.

The complete audition process comprises of the pre-audition work, the audition itself and the post-audition follow up.

The pre-audition work encompasses searching for an audition in the first place. There are a number of ways to find auditions, some people appoint a casting agent while others are represented by casting agencies. These agents or agencies seek out the auditions and charge the artist for their services. You can also find these auditions through the internet or by checking the newspapers. Once you find an audition, the most important aspect of the process begins:

Preparation

You should start with your preparation immediately. This is the key to get through any audition. If you are fully prepared you’ll be very confident about yourself and less nervous; plus a thorough preparation gives you an aura of a professional and helps you to make a good and lasting first impression on the judges. You can also discuss with other auditionists in the same business as you to learn from their experiences either in person or online.

There are many studios that provide you with recording facilities, so that you can record your songs, analyze them and make any necessary improvements. Even after all the practices and preparations, some people experience last minute nerves or jitters, which is completely normal. Try to do something to divert your mind a little like exercising, dancing, etc, whatever suits you.

The Audition

The next step is the audition. If you are well prepared and rehearsed then you are all set and geared up to face anything. Everything will be much simpler and hopefully straightforward. All you have to do now is to present an already prepared piece with all your heart, which is pretty much a straight forward task. Just concentrate, remember what you prepared, pay no attention to distractions, be confident and everything should go as you want it to. Also it is very important to be optimistic and have a positive attitude. It’ll leave a good mark on the judges, make you easy to remember and of course nothing good ever comes from negativity.

Post-Audition

There is nothing much for you to do in the post-audition period until you get a call back. You just have to relax and wait. The call back can sometimes take a long while as there may be hundreds or even thousands of people who auditioned for the same part, so calling them is not a good option.

Once you get a call back, you might be expected to be prepared with some songs or even equipment. Make sure you establish with the casting people to see what is required for you to do in the post-audition period. Always be prepared to face rejections. It might be disappointing at first, no doubt there, but never let it get your spirits down. Always be positive, determination is always required to be successful in an audition!

Remember to always be smiling for the casting directors, especially at the end of your audition. It is always important to leave an audition on good terms because even if you don’t get this one, they may well remember you in the future.

Like any other industry, the casting couch exists in the music industry too. Beware and never fall prey to such things. These measures might seem a shortcut to success, but such success is only short-lived. Always have faith in yourself and your talent as you will get noticed and be successful, if you have talent, no matter what.
